Thanks for posting this, I regularly hear the "fat talk" from the girls in the changeroom and am shocked to see how young and usually teeny-tiny the girls are, and then like you I take a step back and I'm not really that surprised. In the body image literature, it's actually called, "normative discontent" because disastisfcation with one's body is considered to be normal, females who have a positive body image and are satisfied are considered to be the "abnormal" part of the population.
I'm in complete agreement with you about sports and girls participation in it. Once I started swimming varsity in university, I swore that my kids will never set foot in a ballet studio like me, but will be joining swim team as soon as they are allowed.Brehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07339813327284412161noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6066812223875392192.post-64294814452223604322012-03-12T08:06:45.812-07:002012-03-12T08:06:45.812-07:00Great "rant!" Which, it seems, is largely because girls sports tend to be ignored at a higher level and have little promise of fame, money or excess. Therefore, girls actually learn lessons about self-confidence, hard work, etc, as opposed to learning lessons about making it big. (See also women's gymnastics and little girls.) Just thought it was interesting that the same things that make frequently make womens' sports unequal are what can help them.

Also, 12-year-old girls say a lot of stuff just to fit in. They may not even believe what's coming out of their mouths.Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05176815956109059686noreply@blogger.com
